For Prospective Students & Collaborators
A short guide for students considering supervision or a research assistantship, and for researchers considering a collaboration.
My work centers on social capital, interpersonal trust, and economic sociology, with a primary geographic focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Within that, I am especially engaged with political economy, cultural economics, migration governance, and applied quantitative methods, including survey methodology and multivariate analysis. Students or collaborators whose interests overlap with any of these areas are welcome to reach out, including work that touches only part of this list rather than all of it.
I welcome inquiries from prospective graduate students interested in social capital, culture, MENA political economy, or economic sociology, though I am not limited to these topics, whether for thesis supervision, a research assistantship, or general mentorship. A short email describing your background, the specific question or region you are interested in, and why it connects to your own path is the best way to start, it lets me respond with something concrete rather than a general reply. I do not require a finished research proposal at the first contact stage.
I think of my classroom and my supervision as a relationship rather than a transaction. I care about the moments outside the syllabus, mentoring students through uncertainty about what comes next, and I believe that bond is where much of the real learning happens. You can get a sense of how I teach through the Teaching Notes, which are rewritten versions of my own course material.
I am open to collaborative research and academic partnerships. My core interests are social capital, culture, MENA political economy, and economic sociology, but I am not limited to these topics, and I am glad to hear about adjacent work that might connect. My current projects and recent publications are listed on the Research page.
The fastest way to reach me is by email, through the Contact page. For a sense of my published work, see Research or my Google Scholar profile. For teaching roles and research assistant positions I have held, see the CV page.
